What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a health and fitness program that achieves a very broad, general fitness that is applicable to everyday life.  CrossFit won’t make you the best in the world at any physical skill, but it will make you pretty good at every physical skill.  CrossFitters don’t run 4:00 miles or squat 800 pounds, but they might run 5:00 miles and squat 500 pounds.  Oh, and your physical condition right now is irrelevant to whether you are “ready to start CrossFit.”  It is a common misconception that you must be fit before beginning CrossFit.  CrossFit is scalable to any ability level from kids through the elderly.  If you’ve looked at the crossfit.com workout of the day (WOD) before and thought “there’s no way I can do that,” that’s OK.  Performing the WOD unscaled requires a great amount of athletic ability, and most people will need to scale the WOD to their ability level.  That is part of what we offer at CrossFit Impulse.  If you are unfamiliar with CrossFit and want some help getting started, we can educate you and get you on the path to success.  We can scale WODs to any ability level or to accommodate any injury.  Every athlete is different.  However, the ultimate goal is the same for all of us: increasing our level of fitness and health for a better life.  CrossFit is the most effective way to achieve a greater level of fitness and health.  If that statement sounds bold–it is.  We welcome anyone to show evidence to the contrary.

CrossFit is completely open source.  You can read everything you want to know about it on the main site, crossfit.com.  If you want a place to train or have any questions, just give us a call or stop by CrossFit Impulse before or after any of our scheduled WODs (workouts of the day).

What is CrossFit Impulse?

CrossFit Impulse is a CrossFit gym serving the city of Madison, Huntsville, and northwest Madison County.  We are located in a 2900 square foot facility on Castle Drive, near the intersection of Highway 72 and Slaughter Road.

Our Philosophy of Fitness

The subtitle of our logo reads “life. changing. fitness.”  We wrote it this way for a reason.  First, CrossFit is ultimately about leading a better life.  We intend to do this through fitness, which is a result of exercise, but the ultimate goal is to live a longer, happier, more fulfilling life.  A fit person is very mobile, can enjoy the great outdoors, is usually unencumbered by sickness, and feels great most of the time.  Fit people live longer and have more time with their loved ones, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren.  We don’t live to exercise, we exercise to live.  Fitness is almost just a intermediate goal on the path to our ultimate goal: life.

CrossFit is also about changing.  None of us would exercise if we didn’t want to change in some way.  We can either change positively, or we can change negatively.  Either way, we are always changing.  If you aren’t changing, then you are dead: changing.

Fitness is the intermediary through which we will channel our change towards the ultimate goal of a better life.  This is why we believe in CrossFit:  CrossFit develops fitness. That is indisputable.  By the way, before you say to yourself “My program develops fitness,” what is your definition of fitness?  Does it include strength or endurance?  Probably so.  What about balance, coordination, accuracy, agility, stamina, flexibility, power, and speed?   CrossFit’s definition of fitness includes all physical skills, leaving none deficient.  Fitness changes you and leads to a better life: fitness.

The subtitle also reads correctly when taken all together.  CrossFit develops life changing fitness.  It will improve your health, well-being, and overall happiness in ways that you wouldn’t believe if I told you here.  You would think I am a snake-oil salesman (and you may already think that).  You must simply experience it to believe it: life changing fitness.
