Leah Slater is a Registered Nurse currently working in Huntsville Hospital’s trauma and surgical step-down unit. She started CrossFit in December 2008 with her then-fiancée, Hudson Slater. Before starting CrossFit, Leah had never consistently worked out, other than running occasionally. She liked to be active, and thought CrossFit sounded like an exciting challenge. Leah has enjoyed CrossFitting through two pregnancies so far, and looks forward to making even more progress after the delivery of her second baby in July. She loves the camaraderie at CrossFit Impulse and looks forward to working out with her friends every day.

Leah is one of CrossFit Impulse’s most consistent athletes. Her cheerful attitude is part of what makes CFI a great place to train. She also inadvertently provides much entertainment as new CrossFitters, both men and women, often realize after the WOD that they got smoked by the girl who’s seven months pregnant.

He is currently an Area Manager for Performance Food Service and has been in the Food Industry for over 12 years. He is a loving father to a daughter, Lilly, and son, Luke.

Josh says,

I have ‘worked out’ for around 15 years. I have always cared about what I eat and trained hard. I began to dislike the Globo Gym lifestyle and felt like it wasn’t for me anymore. I needed a change. In March of 2011 I began searching the internet for information on CrossFit and proof it wouldn’t destroy my physique.

The ultimate reason I joined a box is that two men I respect greatly did CrossFit: Kevin Lowe and David Marmon. I equate myself to them in terms of strength and goals. I emailed them both and told them I was considering starting CrossFit. Both said, “It will be the best decision you ever made.” It was a huge deal changing the way I trained, because I thought mine was the only way.

Looking back on the past year, they were right. Everything about CrossFit has blown me away, from the people to the training to the camaraderie. I never dreamed I would be able to compete in this when I first started, and yet I just came back from regionals with the CFI affiliate team. I just wish I had found it sooner in life. I have no regrets at all about going 100% CrossFit and only excitement for the future.

Tom Jarrell is a long-time CFI athlete that inspires us all with his dedication and cheerful attitude as he attacks new challenges each day.

Tom says,

I have never been into sports of any kind. My physical activity was limited to what was necessary to pass the Army Physical Fitness Tests.

After retiring from the Army in 1996 I gained a lot of weight and generally began to feel bad. I continued to do some basic workouts and running, but I didn’t have a focus. About 5 years ago, I decided that instead of letting my body continue to go downhill, I would do something about it. I wanted to be in the best shape of my life by the time I reached 60. I began to work with a trainer to tone and gain strength, do Pilates to increase balance and flexibility, and increase my general activity to lose weight.

About a year ago, my son introduced me to CrossFit and I was hooked. Not only is it the best exercise I’ve ever experienced, it is the most fun I’ve ever had exercising! It doesn’t matter what your age or physical condition is…those are just excuses…CrossFit will work for you!

Cherish Washington, a public affairs specialist at the U.S. Army Materiel Command, moved to Huntsville, Ala. in 2009 after joining the command during their BRAC relocation from Fort Belvoir, Va. to Redstone Arsenal, Ala. She is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina and had tried and failed at making fitness a part of her lifestyle as she desired, until now.

A coworker persuaded her to try CrossFit, and after much internal debate she gave it a try. While Cherish enjoyed the different types of workouts and the challenge, it still didn’t make sense and she spent several months not performing to her potential. It was after taking a nutrition class at CFI that the results appeared and she enabled herself to be a better athlete.

In her free time, Cherish enjoys volunteering, spending time with friends, playing volleyball, watching movies and trying new activities.

Jason is a mechanical engineering graduate from Auburn University. He serves as a Project Engineering Assistant Manager for Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing Alabama in Huntsville. Jason knows what being a competitor is all about. He played defensive back for three undefeated state championship football teams. He was on five state championship track and field teams. In addition, Jason served has a volunteer firefighter for two years. After climbing Mt. Fuji in the summer of 2007 at 32 pounds overweight and having a near death experience, Jason decided he had let himself go for way too long. While searching for a new path to achieve real fitness, as opposed to gabbing it up in between super sets at the local Globo gym, he stumbled upon CrossFit. Fascinated by the functional movements, Jason began to slowly incorporate CrossFit into his basic routine, but ran into the same training obstacles as other beginning CrossFitters. Jason remembers, “Globo-Heads don’t like you marking up their walls, dropping their weights or hanging rings from their Smith Machines. ” After about three years of the CrossFit/Globo hybrid workout fiasco, Jason wanted to go 100% CrossFit and join a box. While perusing the Interwebz for a local CrossFit box, he found an article called “Primal Blueprint Fitness Review” on the CrossFit Impulse website. He’s been 100% CrossFit since.
