Random Gorilla Thoughts…
What Is Your Coach’s Goal for You in 2026?
Goal setting can be difficult, some are too lofty, some feel too small this time of year, well have no fear, GORILLACLAUSE IS HERE! Just like the USPS, we deliver!
Goal #1: See Yourself As I See You
I wish each of you could see yourselves the way I do. You’re true titans of your own world—juggling work, relationships, family, friends kids, budgets, the list is never ending.. and yet, you still make fitness a priority. It’s in our nature as Cross Fitters to be hard on ourselves, but if you are reading this, I want you to cut yourself some slack. From where I stand, you are killing it. I’m proud of the effort you put in every single day, and anyone who disagrees can fight me in the parking lot.
Goal #2: Use Your Fitness to Help Someone Else
I helped a friend clean out a storage over the holiday, and what seemed insurmountable was in fact a short few hours work for a couple motivated, strong people, and a truck. I thought about this, who cares how many thrusters you can do if you can’t help them when they need you? So this year, find a way to use your fitness to help someone else. Maybe it’s helping a friend move something heavy, lending a hand on a project, I don’t pretend to have all the ideas or answers, but make it your mission to use your fitness to help someone else. Funny, but I’ve always thought this way about partner workouts, it’s not me doing a workout, It’s me doing my part to help my friend through something hard. What a wild concept, using our fitness to help our friends. CRAZY RIGHT? Use your strength to help make someone’s life better, you’ll appreciate it far more, and they will too.
Goal #3: Find Joy in the Little Things
I want you to find joy in the small moments. Not just the vacation or the concert, find the fun and pleasure in the simple things. I remember a scene from Dances With Wolves (If you haven’t watched, homework assignment you communist!) Kevin Costner (Lt. Dunbar) warns Chief Ten Bears about the coming disasters of the future, and all Ten Bears would talk about were fun times and simple pleasures. Someday, all that is going to remain are memories of the simplest of things, make a point of finding those little things and making them memorable. Schedule a coffee date with a friend. take 10 minutes to go on a walk and chat about nothing. Stuck in Traffic? find an enjoyable moment to focus on. Savor the flavor of these things, the big stuff, good and bad, is gonna happen anyway.
Goal #4: Weather the Storm
“Something wicked doth this way cometh, and cometh right soon” I don’t remember where I got this line, but it plays on repeat in my mind. Fam, stuff is going to happen. Known and unknown obstacles are coming, sickness, injury, work stress, a thousand different pressures are coming for you in the next 360 days. Pressure is a privilege, solving problems is a blessing, one of the major goals of CFI is to build people who can endure life’s challenges. Nay, not just endure, but THRIVE! One of my favorite quotes from General Patton is “I love a man who smiles while he fights”. We know the fight is coming, all we can do is prepare ourselves and endure… with a smile on our face. When we look back on 2026, let’s see a year of overcoming difficulties together.

Still Reading? Wow, look at that. you already defy every current concept of human behavior, that people don’t read and they can’t focus on anything longer than 3 minutes. JUST LOOK AT YOU GO! January is Chock full of fun, we got a glorious back squat cycle and everyone’s favorites, Bulgarian Split squats for accessory, because whoa baby are they good for you! (I’m obsessed with single legged strength and you should be too, a conversation for another time) Lots of Heavy cleans in the cards, skill days, fun and adventure. Grab a friend and get to squatting, why are you still reading? GO SQUAT.
