Affiliate Throwdown with CFHSV

Affiliate Throwdown

Competing in CrossFit competitions often requires a lot of time, travel, and expense. Many athletes are also intimidated by being thrown into competition against the best of the best. With this in mind, we’ve created a way to experience the fun and learning of competition without all the downsides. Join us in the inaugural Affiliate Throwdown between CrossFit Impulse and CrossFit Huntsville. This is also a chance to network with fellow CrossFitters in your area. This will be a team competition, and we certainly want our team to win, but this isn’t a battle of the Empire vs the Rebellion. This is a friendly competition with the intent of advancing our fitness and having fun at the same time.

Teams will be constructed from three classes of athletes: beginner, immediate, and advanced. No matter what your ability level may be, you can contribute to the team and know you’ll be matched against other competitors of similar ability. Team workouts will be chosen with a system of random draw and alternating decision-making by each team. Each team will have a chance to sculpt the workout to their strengths, while the opposing team tries to do the same. You’ll also see Callouts, Wildcards, and other fun additions that mean absolutely anything can happen.

To sign up, fill out this data sheet and give it to a trainer at CFI (hardcopies also available at the gym). CFI and CFHSV trainers will use this data to group competitors into beginner, intermediate, and advanced categories. Then check out the complete rules here. After that just show up at 8 AM on January 29th at CrossFit Huntsville. This event is free, and it’s guaranteed to be one of the most rewarding ways you can spend your Saturday morning, so why not give it a shot?

Timeline:

  • Now- Registration opens
  • 23 January- Registration closes
  • 26 January- Class rosters posted and class leaders assigned
  • 29 January 8 AM- Competition begins

  1. I have never attempted several of the items on the ability level sheet… is this something I should attempt prior to turning it in, or can the trainers pretty well guage where I need to be put?

    1. The end result is a judgment call by the trainers (who know you and your capabilities), so just fill out what you can. If you haven’t attempted something on the sheet but have done something similar or you have a good guess about where you would fall, then jot it down and note it as such.

  2. Sounds like fun! Do we know when this might be wrapping up? E and I have to head out of town that afternoon, and I don’t want to sign up if it’s an all-day thing.

  3. I think we have 23 athletes signed up for this so far, and we’d love to have more! This is for all ability levels. There will be plenty of competitors on both teams who don’t have a pullup, don’t have an overhead squat, and have never completed a WOD Rx’d. Advanced athletes will also have the chance to use their skills in muscle ups, handstand pushups, and heavy lifting. This will be a great time with our neighbor CrossFitters. Give it a shot.

  4. Is it a bad sign if I had to select the first entry on every one of the questions on the form? If I have a CF score it’s probably negative, and I am decidedly unable to perform any of the maneuvers listed! Maybe I can show up and cheer-lead 🙂

    1. Rick, you’re allowed to be a cheerleader only of you dress up like one! (If you don’t have a cheerleader costume, I suppose your Halloween costume from last year will have to suffice…). Just kidding. But seriously, you should compete! It’s about doing YOUR best, not someone else’s. The rest of us will be there to cheer you on.

  5. Rick, that just means you’re a beginner. Nobody here was born an advanced athlete. Every one of us has been a beginner. You’ll be welcome as a competitor or a cheerleader, whichever you prefer.
